At first glance it may not seem that a yogini would practice martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai Kickboxing. Looking deeply at the meaning of ahimsa, or non-violence, it does not at all mean that we should not protect ourselves. In fact, it can be more loving to another to not allow them to abuse or mistreat us. Physically defending oneself is a last resort, and survivors of abuse or assault already have many other self-defense skills. They can, however, find healing in the feeling of empowerment and choice that is found in many martial arts.
